About Barcelos - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Probably the most well-known symbol of Portugal is the colorful ceramic rooster that has its origins in the beautiful city of Barcelos, where, according to local legend, it is reputed to have saved the life of a traveler wrongly accused of theft by his innocence. The complete story is told on a 15th century cross found in the ruins of the Dukes Palace in Braganca, destroyed by the earthquake of 1755. The pottery, whether in the form of roosters or household objects, continues to be the craft of this medieval city, which lies on a plateau above the Cavado River, surrounded by beautiful green hills.
Apart from the famous cock, another gem of Barcelos is the huge weekly market held every Thursday in Campo Da Republica. This open market in the center of the city is one of the largest of its kind in the country, and the market boasts a huge range of locally produced ceramics, along with other local handicrafts and goods. Other points of interest in the city include the old Jewish quarter and the various streets lined with medieval and baroque houses.
