About Carvoeiro - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Known or Praia de Carvoeiro Carvoeiro (although the latter is not a formal name) is the parish of the Portuguese municipality of Lagoa, belonging to the Algarve region. The settlement is situated 5 km from Lagoa, with an area of 14.12 square kilometers and a total of 2784 inhabitants. To create secondary local government unit in 1985 and gained city status in April 2001.
This was the picturesque fishing village with a long history as a settlement has developed along the last decades as the main tourist area of the municipality, with some protected by rocky beaches. Here are traces of Roman houses and their naval activity in the area. Here there is also a long history of pirate attacks and assaults on enemy troops to the coast, and numerous naval battles, the most famous being a 1544 battle between a maval excadron led by Petro D. da Cunha and a Turkish ship of pirates, Xarramet .
According to historical sources, the village name derives from "Caboiere", an ancient name for the local fishing catunurile medieval Islamic period. Over the entire history, fishing has been the main support of the economy in this area. However, since 1960, tourism has gradually become area's economic base, this building is its hotels, apartment complexes, shops and significant improvements in infrastructure.
In the western part of town there is an archaeological site of a fort built in 1670 as part of the defense system of the Algarve coast in which a single gate was left standing. The archeological site is oriented to the sea and a chapel, whose construction is said to date back to before the Defence Force. A few hundred meters in the east along the coast, is the natural site Algar Seco, a place where waves have eroded cliffs, carving caves, small islands and water wells.
