Coimbra is a university town and a district in Portugal. The city of Coimbra is located 120 km south of Porto and 190 km north of Lisbon on the A1, the highest highway in Portugal. It crosses the Mondego River, 40 km east of Figueira da Foz. The first capital of Portugal in the twelfth century and the thirteenth century, the city of Coimbra has a population of more than 150,000 in city and 300,000 in the metropolitan area. It is the third most important city in Portugal (after Lisbon and Porto) and the central part of the country's capital. Coimbra City Day is celebrated on July 4. Coimbra City Festival is held in honor of Queen St. Elizabeth, wife of King Dom Dinis and patriarch of the city.
Religious festivities are held only in even years, but the city is celebrated on an annual basis in July. Among special events, remember the fireworks during the night march of penance. But the most famous festivals in Coimbra are students. Queima das Fitas is the festival of Medicine graduates. Festa das Latas Latada or is a welcome parade, organized at the beginning of each academic year, in honor of the new students (Caloiros).
Festa das Latas sec.al dating from the nineteenth century when the Coimbra students felt the need to express their joy connected with the early bye and a new academic year. The student is the second largest festival das Fitas Quim (burning fabrics). More important than the first, it takes place at the end of the second half of the current academic year (usually early May) and the occasion for one of the largest university in Europe offers. It takes eight days, each for one of the eight faculties of the University of Coimbra: Literature, Law, Medicine, Science and Technology, Pharmacy, Economics, Psychology and Educational Sciences, Physical Education and Sport. Festivities are open to the entire academic community and attract a large number of national and international tourists. During Queima das Fitas drink more beer than a week at Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany.
