About Evora - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Evora is one of the finest and most charming cities in Portugal. It's a real open air museum with a large number of preserved monuments and public buildings, what they did to protect the UNESCO city, surrounding a World Cultural Heritage.
Everyone was after he left the town Evora. The Celts were the ones who called the settlement "Ebora" and the Romans have left here the most important landmark, the Temple of Diana. Dating from the 2nd century, the Temple of Diana is one of the best preserved Roman monuments of the Iberian peninsula, built on a stone platform three feet high, with 14 of the 18 original Corinthian columns still standing. Painted houses, the arches and twisted alleyways that characterize the town, reflects the Moorish presence in the area.
Main square, Praça do Giraldo, is the best place to start visiting. It was a place for executions during the Inquisition but is now filled with shops and cafes and is surrounded by attractive houses with wrought iron balconies. A fountain built in 1571, before the Renaissance church of Santo Antao, dominates one end of this market space. The towers of the cathedral built in 1186 can be seen here. Near the cathedral is Museum of the City that represents the long history of Evora by Roman columns, paintings from the 16th century and modern sculptures.
Evora is less than 2 hours from Lisbon which makes possible a one-day trip here to visit the capital of Portugal. The place is an ideal starting point for visiting the Alentejo region and a inoptare here is recommended.
