Funchal is the capital of Madeira, Portugal. It was founded by João Gonçalves Zarco in 1421 and elevated to city by King Manuel I of Portugal in 1508. In the sixteenth century, Funchal has been an important transit point between India and New World, and was considered to be a place of wholeness. It was also the origin of sugar and Madeira wine. Between 1892 and 1905, Portugal has issued a series of postage stamps with the inscription "Funchal", but returned to the name of Madeira.
Visitors can spend days of much needed: tour, "cable car" to the Monte, with the breathtaking beauty, and stretches in the mountains above the town. Departure station Almirante Reis Park is located in the old part of town. The station is situated near Monte Tropical Garden, the Caminho das Babosas and can receive up to 800 passengers per hour. This type of equipment is currently used in other Portuguese cities (Guimaraes). The trip from Funchal to Monte takes about 15 minutes.
During the invasion of the 20th century, traveling Funchal - Monte was done by steam train. Now, after 100 years, steam train was replaced by "cable car". The booths are constructed to carry eight people. Mono-cable system was considered the safest. "Cable car" is a new means of transport in the region and has become one of the major attractions of tourists visiting Madeira.
