"Jerónimos Monastery" and "Tower of Belem" in Lisbon in 1983, were included on the UNESCO world cultural heritage list.
The most important industries are active in Lisbon to steel, textile, ceramics, shipbuilding and fishing.
At the end of XIX th century urbanization was extended not only in the area near the river Tejo, and the outside (now Avenue of Freedom). In 1934 was built Marquês de Pombal. The urbanization of the late twentieth century is marked by a peculiar architecture, such as Amoreiras Towers (1985, architect Tomás Taveira), Belém Cultural Centre (opened 1991) Oriente Station (1998, architect Santiago Calatrava), Vasco da Gama Tower and Oceanarium (1998, architect Peter Chermayeff).
History of the town has connections with the mythical nymph Calypso and Odysseus, the famous ancient Julius Caesar, since it annexed the city in the Roman province of Lusitania, the conquering Moors and romantic connections, since 1147, Dom Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal.
Built and rebuilt after several large earthquakes, the city has placed river town charm. Rio Tagus or Tejo, is the animator of life in the Square Trade. Sao Jorge Castle dominates the city and its fortifications and offers the most beautiful view. Moorish Alfama district is old and lucky escape after an earthquake the whole, situated at the foot of the castle, with narrow streets and steep descend to the river bank.
Cathedral, built by Dom Afonso after expelling the Moors, has the air of a fortress and remember the history of those tumultuous times.
Masteiro dos Jeronimos Monument, dedicated to great Vasco da Gama and his journey to India is the most glorious monument of Lisbon.
Bairro Alto is ideal for an afternoon of walking and shopping. Open cafes and restaurants along the promenade has a special charm and is very popular place for tourists.
