Coimbra is a university town and a district in Portugal. The city of Coimbra is located 120 km south of Porto and 190 km north of Lisbon on the A1, the highest highway in Portugal. It crosses the Mondego River, 40 km east of Figueira da Foz. The first
capital of Portugal in the twelfth century and the thirteenth century, the city of Coimbra has a population of more than 150,000 in city and 300,000 in the metropolitan area. It is the third most important city in Portugal (after Lisbon and Porto) and the
central part of the country's capital. Coimbra City Day is celebrated on July 4.
